Piracy is a very popular theme when it comes to media which is why the gaming market is almost oversaturated with pirate-related games. Even so, a crossover between two of the biggest names in pirate-themed gaming has just been announced. However, it appears that some pretty important people weren’t aware since the Sea of Thieves team neglected to give the Tales of Monkey Island creator a heads-up about it. It’s surprising to hear about your IP being combined with another IP, but ideally, you’d like to be involved in the project, or at the very least, informed about it.
A Surprise Sea of Thieves and Monkey Island Crossover
In the early days of PC gaming, point-and-click games dominated the market, and the Tales of Monkey Island series by Ron Gilbert stood high and mighty. As gaming became more advanced and communal, the modern pirate game Sea of Thieves made a big splash. Now, it’s been announced by the dev team that Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island is definitely happening.
However, as reported by Eurogamer, Ron Gilbert had no idea that the crossover was happening and was not involved in any way. According to his recent posts, Gilbert states that it happened “behind [his] back,” much to the disappointment of fans.
Despite this, it looks like Ron Gilbert nor other key members of the Monkey Island team will stand in the way of the crossover. It appears that the Sea of Thieves team is trying to pay homage as accurately as possible. Since the Tales of Monkey Island series is almost entirely puzzle-based, Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island will revolve heavily around solving puzzles and uncovering mysteries. Though reports show that Ron Gilbert the Monkey Island team would not be averse to making new entries in the series, they don’t seem to have any interest in crossovers of the like.
Although many like to see their work admired, they would also like to be involved or at least informed as to how their work will be used. Sea of Thieves sprung their Monkey Island crossover on its creators and fans of the series, which is suspect to see the least and for their sake, it better be worth playing.
