Overwatch is a massive, multiplayer shooter that has captured the hearts of millions of fans. This futuristic shooter has dozens of characters to choose from while playing, and for the most part, fans haven’t had any complaints about the epic roster of heroes they can choose from. Most fans will agree, however, that playing Overwatch’s support heroes can feel inhibiting. Playing the role of a healer in any video game can be boring though, so many players will try to find ways around solely supporting their teammates.
D.Va is one of Overwatch’s most popular heroes. D.Va is able to take a lot of damage and deal just as much out, just as effectively! She’s incredibly quick and her Defense Matrix ability allows her to effectively defend herself from incoming enemy fire. D.Va is a tiny tank in Overwatch, and she is the first choice hero of many players. With that being said, D.Va is definitely not a healer. This character doesn’t even come close to being a support hero in Overwatch, which is why many fans don’t realize she actually has a hidden healing ability. This is technically not an official, canon healing ability given to D.Va in Overwatch. This technique is actually based on her preexisting Defense Matrix ability. The Defense Matrix ability allows D.Va to delete incoming enemy projectiles before they reach her or her teammates; this ability also allows D.Va to heal other players, in a bizarre fashion. This is possible due to the way the game deletes the incoming projectiles in-game.
When a projectile is created, it is assigned an “owner” in the game. Whether the projectile deals healing or damage, it grants credit back to the character that created it, its owner. This only changes if the “owner” of the projectile is somehow changed before its target is reached. There are few characters with the ability to change projectiles’ targets within the game. If a player changes the ownership of a projectile an enemy has prior to it making contact, the ownership of that projectile will change to the player, and the player will assume all damage or healing credits instead of the original owner, the enemy.

When a projectile hits D.Va’s Defense Matrix, the ownership of that projectile is transferred to D.Va before it is deleted. This means that there is an incredibly small, but viable, window of time that players can utilize before the projectile is deleted. If D.Va is the target of a healing orb, and it hits her Defense Matrix’s hitbox, she can use that projectile to heal another player in the small window that it’s under her control. Because of this, players can heal each other as D.Va in Overwatch! Unfortunately, there is a catch.
Although this is an amazing technique to be utilized when playing with friends, D.Va can only use this ability to heal enemies. This is due to how the ownership of the projectile changes in-game, and when. So, unfortunately, although D.Va can heal other players, she cannot use her hidden healing ability to heal her fellow teammates. Although this is a cool technique you can show off to your friends when playing, it isn’t ideal for actual in-game combat.
