The horror genre fluctuates in the world of gaming, but one series has consistently delivered in terms of popularity. This is none other than the Amnesia series by Frictional Games with a new entry scheduled for release later this month. Called Amnesia: The Bunker, it follows a new character in an entirely new setting and time period, but still with the series’ trademark case of amnesia.

Though this game has been discussed periodically, the new unedited gameplay footage is up and getting players excited over another tense horror experience to endure. That is, assuming they don’t succumb to twisted creatures or the darkness itself.

Amnesia: The Bunker Gameplay

Amnesia: The Bunker’s latest pre-release gameplay footage.

In 2010, Frictional Games took the horror gaming world by storm with their release of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. With a memorable style to build on, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs followed in 2013, and Amnesia: Rebirth in 2020. Three years later, many are getting ready to play the newest one, Amnesia: The Bunker. Earlier today, the dev team released a 10-minute clip of pure gameplay footage on the studio’s personal channel.

It showcases all the series’ trademark mechanics including navigating the darkness, various interaction physics, and running at the slightest hint of danger. New elements include a light source that generates a large amount of noise and weapons including a revolver and grenades. The video ends with a slide stating that the game is expected in May 2023.

All of the series’ games have taken place in the past, typically in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They all follow stories about characters who find themselves stranded in strange locations filled with dangerous creatures. As per the title, the characters have little to no memory of where they are and why they are there.

In The Bunker, you assume the role of an allied soldier patrolling what appears to be an abandoned WWI bunker. Your goal revolves around exploring the different areas looking for keys, signs of life, and ultimately a way out. On top of that, you need to keep the generators fueled to keep the lights on so whatever horrifying photosensitive monster is pursuing you, doesn’t catch up.

The Amnesia series is an iconic horror collection and Frictional Games wants to add to it with Amnesia: The Bunker. If the gameplay footage is any indicator of what’s to come, you can expect a terrifying trip through history.
